Episode 170 Review

Robbie and Hillary in the Christmas EpisodeIn this Christmas episode of category 5 Robbie touches on several different points but the main focus of the show was on Zimbra desktop.  Zimbra collaborative suite is an open source software platform that allows for similar functionality to Microsoft exchange, their desktop client allowing people to easily connect to other e-mail programs and their server software is called Zimbra desktop.  Installing it on Linux can be a bit of a challenge if you’re not exactly sure how to undergo it, watching this episode will make it far easier to learn how to install Zimbra desktop on your Linux operating system.  I personally do not use Zimbra but found this feature on the show to be very informative and something  good to know. If you’re an Ubuntu user you can find it even easier as Robbie explains Zimbra is available via perfectbuntu.Robbie Shows the Zimbra installer

In addition to Zimbra desktop, Robbie also touches on a very touchy subject, the youtube close captions feature. It made a rather family friendly show seem less than friendly, it was a mess. However, humorous as they might have been those captions point out one indisputable fact, Google is not ready to enter the Dictation market! So, if you found the show via Youtube please to not take the captions as any indication of what this show is about.

Robbie and Erik Enjoy themselvesThere was some humor as usual, as we see Hillary front and center again while Eric I presume had the day off. In case you missed the song last week during the show Robbie added a link to download the Category 5 Blues song featuring Eric the Kidd and Robbie the Soulman Ferguson, ok so I made up those nick names but they seem blues-ish.

If you’re a Canadian and watch the show the Brother MFC-J615W was given away to one lucky Canadian viewer. This puppy has a little of everything and I do mean everything you could want in a printer.

New Site Impressions

Now for a taste of what lays in wait for you guys, the new site is awesome and while I cannot go into specifics I can get you a general idea of it.

Well first off what Robbie will let me tell you about it

  • It runs on Joomla 1.5.x
  • It has an incredibly modified theme
  • It will automate a lot of what Robbie has to do after the cameras go off every Tuesday
  • Optimized for most computer configurations (older machines will run surprisingly fast considering the amount  of stuff put into the site)

I had my reservations at first thinking the site no more than a glorified theme upgrade, however as I used it I started to see what Robbie meant when he said heavily modified. It is in no way simply a glorified theme upgrade, no it contains a much more fluid way to handle the user experience. The Episode Notes Page for example has been completely reformatted to make it easier to read and I imagine for Robbie to write.

Forums will be present as well and while I cannot say in what capacity they will be present I can say that they will in fact be there in some form or another, I know vague sorry.

Since I cannot give you screenshots or mention how any of this has changed specifically I think that I will end by saying, when you first see the site do not judge it too quickly. It might seem a mere theme upgrade but I assure you as you look around you will see it is much more.

You left out the shoutcast Christmas music primer. Only weeks ago I was able to search through the Shoutcast stations in Exaile, Banshee, and Rythmbox. These listings are no longer available. And the Ubuntu forums aren’t really helpful. Does anyone know what’s going on?
